What is a dental crown?

Restoring and strengthening damaged teeth

A crown is a form of dental restoration that replaces the part of your tooth that is damaged or broken. For example, if you have a particularly large or deep filling or a piece of tooth has broken off, we will create a crown to replace and restore the tooth in line with your other teeth.

Other uses for crowns include:
To improve the appearance of discoloured fillings by replacing them with a crown.
To protect or cap a restored tooth following root canal treatment so you can bite down and eat as normal.
To anchor a bridge or dental implant to keep it firmly in place.
To cover up a chipped or broken tooth.
Crowns are also used to:

Improve the appearance of discoloured or heavily filled teeth

Protect and reinforce teeth following root canal treatment

Anchor a dental bridge securely in place

Cover a chipped or broken tooth for a seamless look

What is a dental bridge?

Replacing missing teeth for a complete smile

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth using support from neighbouring teeth or implants. It’s fixed securely in place and designed to look and feel just like your natural teeth.

Bridges can be made from precious metal or zirconia (porcelain) depending on your needs. For visible areas, zirconia offers a lifelike, aesthetic finish.

In some cases, your bridge can be supported by a dental implant for additional stability and strength.

How is a dental bridge fitted?

A seamless process for natural-looking results

The process for fitting a bridge is similar to a crown. Supporting teeth are carefully prepared, and digital scans are taken to design your custom bridge.

Our technicians create a restoration that fits comfortably and blends seamlessly with your smile. Once fitted, we’ll provide detailed aftercare advice to help you maintain your bridge for many years.

Why might I need crowns or bridges?

Your teeth may become discoloured or damaged for a variety of reasons. It could be lost teeth due to trauma, gum disease or even caused by certain medications or medical conditions, like diabetes. This can result in gaps in your dentition, which can have a serious impact on your confidence and prevent you from smiling and laughing. In extreme circumstances, you may feel embarrassed, anxious and sometimes leading to depression.

At Waterfall Dental & Implant Centre, we are committed to reversing these scenarios through the use of crowns and bridges to repair and restore your smile so you can feel confident again.

What is a crown?

A crown is a form of dental restoration that replaces the part of your tooth that is damaged or broken. For example, if you have a particularly large or deep filling or a piece of tooth has broken off, we will create a ‘crown’ to replace and restore the tooth in line with your other teeth.

Other uses for crowns include:

  • Improving the appearance of discoloured fillings.
  • Protecting/capping a restored tooth following root canal treatment so you can bite down and eat as normal.
  • Anchoring a bridge or dental implant to keep it firmly in place.
  • Covering up a chipped or broken tooth.

How does a crown work?

We follow a comprehensive step-by-step process when fitting a crown:

First we prepare the damaged tooth by removing old fillings and shaping the original tooth to accommodate the crown.

We take an impression or digital scan of the tooth that needs repairing/restoring.

From that impression, we create a crown in our dental laboratory that will precisely fit the damaged tooth, making sure it exactly matches the neighbouring teeth in terms of bite, contact, size and colour, to ensure the final result will be as natural-looking as possible.

Finally, we bond the crown onto the original tooth.

As with all of our dental procedures, we explain the entire process to you, discuss the different types of crowns available, answer any questions you may have and guide you all the way.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a fixed type of restoration that replaces missing teeth. It often makes use of adjacent teeth to give a stable and secure restoration, enabling you to chew comfortably with the bridge in place and boosting your confidence. Because there are various types of bridges, we will discuss the most suitable options with you as we plan your treatment.

The base of a bridge can be constructed from precious metal or zirconia (porcelain) depending on each individual requirement, making the bridge solid and hard-wearing. If the bridge is going to be visible in your smile line, we will use a zirconia base so the bridge is as natural-looking as possible next to your other teeth.

As well as making sure your teeth are repaired, restored, strong and stable, a bridge will also strengthen your surrounding teeth. In some cases, we may need to fix the bridge to your jaw with a dental implant, particularly if you have several adjacent teeth missing.

How does a bridge work?

The bridge will be made in the same way we make a crown; by preparing your teeth before taking an impression or digital scan of the teeth to be repaired and restored. Our experienced dental technicians will use these impressions and scans to make the final bridge.

Once you’ve had a crown or bridge fitted, we will develop a personal hygiene regime for you to follow to make sure your crown or bridge lasts a lifetime.

Dr Olivia is fantastic. I consistently get appointments promptly. She is efficient, precise, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have long had a fear of going to the dentist, but since seeing Dr Olivia, it doesn’t worry me anymore and I feel reassured that I’m in good hands any time I’ve had an issue.

Front desk team are also excellent, easy to reach via phone, and remember details about any dental issue I’m having, so I don’t need to keep repeating myself. Overall, good, efficient, expert vibes. I recommend! I especially recommend if you are an anxious patient like me.

Dr Janki went above and beyond to make it happen. She booked me in with her the same day when she had finished her clinic and did the extraction in her own time. Such a lovely, pleasant, caring and professional Dr.
