At Waterfall Dental & Implant Centre, our first priority is to protect and preserve your natural teeth. Common reasons for extraction include:

Severe decay or infection beyond repair

Infected teeth not responding to root canal treatment

Gum disease leading to bone loss around the tooth

Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth

Trauma or injury that can’t be repaired with crowns and bridges

Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out naturally

When might I need a tooth removed?

Understanding when extraction is the right choice

Sometimes, removing a tooth is necessary to relieve pain or protect neighbouring teeth and gums.

Our dentists will always explore every option before recommending extraction, ensuring your comfort and long-term dental health.

Surgical vs non-surgical extractions

Two safe and effective options tailored to your needs

At Waterfall Dental & Implant Centre, we offer both surgical and non-surgical extractions depending on your situation.

Surgical extraction
If a tooth is impacted, broken beneath the gum line, or has complex roots, a small incision is made in the gum to remove it carefully. This method is also used for some wisdom teeth.

Non-surgical extraction
For teeth visible above the gum line, a simple extraction can be carried out quickly under local anaesthetic. The dentist gently loosens and removes the tooth - a straightforward, routine procedure with minimal recovery time.

Our caring team takes time to ensure you feel informed and relaxed at every step.

Common questions about tooth extractions

Your tooth extraction questions answered

Will I feel pain during a tooth extraction?

No - local anaesthetic completely numbs the area, ensuring a comfortable procedure. Patients across Tooting and South London often find the process easier than expected.

How long is recovery after an extraction?

Most people recover within a few days. Some tenderness or swelling is normal but typically subsides quickly with proper care and advice from our team.

Can I replace a tooth after it’s been removed?

Yes - we offer several options such as dental implants and bridges to restore your smile and prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting.

What should I avoid after an extraction?

Avoid hot drinks, smoking, and rinsing vigorously for 24 hours. Eat soft foods and follow the aftercare guidance provided by your dentist.

Are surgical extractions more complex?

They are slightly more involved but completely routine for our experienced team in Wandsworth and SW17. You’ll receive full aftercare support for a smooth recovery.

When would I need to have a tooth removed?

There are many reasons why you may need to have a tooth or teeth extracted, but you can be confident that carrying out a surgical extraction is the last resort. Our dental technicians will only conduct a tooth extraction if it’s in your best interests and essential.

There are some scenarios where it is necessary to remove a tooth or several teeth, which will often result in the removal of any pain you are feeling. A surgical extraction may also help us in saving your remaining teeth.

A surgical extraction may be needed when:

  • There is extensive tooth decay from disease or another reason.
  • There are overcrowded teeth in the mouth, i.e. there are too many teeth in your jawline and not enough space for them, which may cause secondary problems.
  • There are infected teeth that aren’t responding to root canal treatment.
  • Teeth don’t have sufficient bone to support them due to periodontal disease.
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or causing another serious problem.
  • Following a serious accident, it’s not possible to save chipped, cracked or broken teeth using other dental treatments, such as crowns and bridges.
  • Milk (baby) teeth that haven’t fallen out.

Our team of experienced dental surgeons will always prioritise the repair and restoration of your teeth before we consider a tooth, or teeth, extraction.

What’s the difference between surgical and non-surgical extractions?

We carry out two forms of tooth extraction - surgical and non-surgical.

Surgical extraction:

When your teeth have particularly long or curved roots, are still beneath the gum line or are more difficult to remove than others, our experienced dental team may need to perform a surgical extraction. This involves making a small incision in the gum line to remove the tooth, potentially in more than one piece.

Non-surgical extraction:

When the tooth is visible, i.e. it can be seen above the gum line, we will use a non-surgical (simple) extraction because we don’t need to make an incision in the gum for access to the tooth. We use the latest and most advanced innovative tools to loosen the tooth, allowing our dental surgeons to grip the tooth, loosening it further if needed, to extract the tooth. During non-surgical extractions, which are much shorter procedures compared to a surgical extraction, most patients will need just a local anaesthetic.

Although tooth extractions are part of many routine treatments provided at Waterfall Dental & Implant Centre, we know the procedure can be an anxious and nerve-wracking experience for our patients. Our entire team is dedicated to making sure you understand this type of major procedure, talking you through the whole process, answering any questions you may have and reassuring you that your comfort and care is our top priority.

Dr Olivia is fantastic. I consistently get appointments promptly. She is efficient, precise, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have long had a fear of going to the dentist, but since seeing Dr Olivia, it doesn’t worry me anymore and I feel reassured that I’m in good hands any time I’ve had an issue.

Front desk team are also excellent, easy to reach via phone, and remember details about any dental issue I’m having, so I don’t need to keep repeating myself. Overall, good, efficient, expert vibes. I recommend! I especially recommend if you are an anxious patient like me.

Dr Janki went above and beyond to make it happen. She booked me in with her the same day when she had finished her clinic and did the extraction in her own time. Such a lovely, pleasant, caring and professional Dr.
